Scope Creep

Scope Creep

In projects-work we often hear of a term called scope-creep.
- Roughly defined as unexpected or originally unplanned work that might need to be addressed as part of the delivery.

But I want to talk about work stress.
Unfortunately too often work stress can also creep up on us.

There are many ways to help control the feeling of stress such as;.
- Taking a deep breath,
- Move away from the work desk for a few minutes
- Going for a walk,
- etc.
All great things to do.

I would add the following to the above to help manage stressful events.

Take a snapshot of the situation in the grand context of what you are doing and where you are.
- 1. I would say in the majority of the situations (maybe +95%), our mind has exaggerated the stressful feeling and in hindsight the work/event can be easily managed
- 2. Ask yourself ... What LITTLE steps (and I emphasise little) can you take that will help reduce or mitigate the feeling. Sometimes just planning a course of action will make us feel better about ourselves because we can see a way forward.
- 3. Is there someone on my team that can help you?

These are easier said than done, but like all things, better managing stress also comes with practice.

Take it easy and have a great day.
