Networking & relationships

My take on networking.

The best networking comes from having worked with people, over a set period of time (+6months), where they (and you) can appreciate each other's work ethic, attitude towards the work and helping to support each other and the team when needed, show casing the ability to deliver the outcomes for which you were hired.

Meaningful relationships by definition cannot be built or made over a few lunches or coffee meet ups.
- NOTE: Although I do agree that an initial 'sale' could be made based on one's initial character impression.

I know the following are cliche, BUT;
- Play the long game.
- What value was exchanged between people.
- What trust did you develop?
- What thanks did you give and receive?
- How sincere were the interactions in which you participated in?

Over the last 5-6 years I have been extremely fortunate to work in a variety of transformation and/or change led projects giving me exposure to work with different people of different work background, in different environments, in different industries.

I have FULL confidence in the network I have built - in that it should open doors and expose future work opportunities that are hidden from everyone else.

Similarly, I also play my part by referring people to each other who are looking for help or guidance, and sharing job opportunities/roles advertised by recruiters.

Final takeaway
- Use LinkedIn to formally build those connections. If anyone is not on LinkedIn, encourage them to create an account.
- Keep in touch where possible. (Easiest way is through LinkedIn messages via the auto-work anniversary reminders or when connections share news of their own new job role)

I'm sure there is more that can be said, but this is probably a good foundation to work on.
