Interview Questions

Two standout statement-questions I was asked in an interview

"We want to build a spaceship" & "We want tires for the car"
- "What do you as a BA?"

As a BA the first thing NOT to do, is go into solution-mode.

Remember the basics. What is the end-purpose, and what requirements do we need to fulfil this.

In the first question, the interviewer said, "we just want a spaceship - that's it!"
- This response will auto-trigger your mind to think they might be after a space shuttle, or a SpaceX rocket etc.

Probe and ask questions, how big does it need to be, how many people does it need to carry, how far into space will it go? the moon, Mars, low-earth orbit etc?

- The response to the above questions: "They want to build a space ship for kids to play in at the local park"

Similarly, with the tire question, you should NOT respond by saying we'll speak with manufacturers of tires and see what they can do for what cost etc.

Ask, what sort of tire do they need, slicks, treaded, for road, track, off-road, what size, what width, what compound, what sort of wheel will it sit on, 18", 20", 22" etc etc.

The interviewer said at the end, that approx. 50% of the BAs interviewed did not ask the right questions and veered off-track.

So takeaway - probe and prod with questions where its not clear and you'll succeed in your BA role.
