Cultural Fit

Cultural Fit

“We’re looking for someone that will be a cultural fit?”

In the past I would have taken offence at this.

“Why am I being judged on whether they like me, why not see judge for my achievements and experience”

However, after having worked in a fast paced start-up, I can tell you, it is best for both the candidate and the team.

The last thing any new hire wants is to turn up to a new job and discover the culture and environment is not what you thought it was.

So what is cultural fit?

In my experience the hiring team are looking for someone who:
-         Can gel with the current team
-         Espouses the same sentiment towards the company values and mission statement.
-         Can hit the ground running.
-         Is flexible - can switch between different work priorities quickly.
-         Is able to help and assist outside of their core work duties and work hours

Different organisations and oftentimes teams within organisations will have a way certain way of working.

If you are rejected because you are told “you are not the right fit”, take it as a blessing.
You will find other opportunities where your personality IS a fit.

And if you ARE a FIT,
Working with people who just ‘click’, makes a huge different to how we feel at work because work/team/project accomplishments are so much sweeter.

At the start up I mentioned earlier – the CEO once made a comment that still resonates with me today.

- “I hire good people and my people hire good people”

Have a great day.
